Is this a good read? I'm not at all interested in becoming a card counter, or breaking the bank in Vegas, but this book is so infamous and so widely read that I want to experience it.
Is this worth my time? Can someone find entertainment in this book, or would it be as boring as a person with no kitchen reading a cookbook?

Thorp focuses mostly on single deck blackjack and card counting as a strategy to gain a positive edge against the casino.
Today, his strategies on blackjack make it the best game a gambler can play in casino. The book explains the math behind the decisions presented on the card and why play is altered in certain situations.
The book explains some card counting methods. Not everyone has the attention span to be a perfect counter, but having an understanding of how the systems work makes sitting at a table more interesting and entertaining.
My only complaint with the book is some of the presentation of math at times reads like a technical paper and can get cumbersome with flipping back and forth between charts, but the information provided far outweighs some of the presentation issues.
Nov 30, Jack W Perry rated it it was amazing. If you play blackjack, you must read this book. The author, E. Thorp invented the 'basic system' that every good blackjack player memorizes.
Thorp invented and perfected card counting and the odds. Thorp actually was so effective, he changed the way casinos deal and manage blackjack.
This is the original book on blackjack. All the others are derivatives of this one. The book settings are dated would love to see an updated version but the guidelines of beating blackjack are here.
Thorp was the If you play blackjack, you must read this book. Thorp was the one who established such rules as "stand when dealer shows a 6"; "double-down on a soft 18 when dealer shows a face card"; "never split 4s" etc.
It is all here. Got one more 2! He says you can only split pairs once and if you get another of the number you split, you cannot split again.
This is absolutely not true with regards to Tahoe. This book really teaches you a ton about BlackJack even aside from card counting.
The technique taught has helped me tremendously getting my time to count a full deck down to about 19 seconds which is really good for me.
Loved the size of it too. Very handy and nicely written. One person found this helpful. I bought a book for Oldie but a Goodie.
I bought a book for my son and a book for myself. It works. Memorize book then, use the principles in the book. See all reviews.
Top reviews from other countries. Great book. My book came a little damaged, but anyway, I can still read it. Tells you everything in great depth.
Defiantly worth getting. Report abuse. Good insight into life in the '60's and this guy changed the way to bet in casinos forever!
So the casinos changed too! Thorp took them on and won! He then took his formulato the stock market and won there too!

He published it a year ago, and now the proof is in: it works David E. Scherman January 13, pp. The classiest gambling game of all—just ask James Bond—is that enticing thing called baccarat, or chemin de fer.
Its rules prevent a fast shuffle, and there is very little opportunity for hanky-panky. Thorp has now come up with a system to beat it, and the system seems to work.
It has also been spotted and barred from play in two casinos. Could it be bye-bye to baccarat, too? Thorp himself now uses a combination of wraparound glasses and a beard to change his appearance on successive Las Vegas visits.
